Support

For Customer Support, please e-mail Customer Support directly at [email protected], or call us at 661-587-9633 (1000-1600 Monday-Friday). One of our staff will provide personal attention to any questions you may have. If you have tried both of these methods and don't have a response within two business days, we're clearly experiencing a surge (which usually happens once a month as subscription copies arrive in mail boxes, and whenever we are processing orders for new release shipping).

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon does my subscription start?
Subscriptions start (or restart) with the next issue to print. We print to order and cannot start a subscription with a back issue. Once you've placed an order, it takes one to two weeks for your subscription to be scheduled. Your subscription is then added to the next production cycle and shipped via USPS Periodical mail. For example, if your subscription was ordered and received by the publisher in November, and the December issue has already shipped, your order will likely be added to the January mailing. Your subscription starts when you receive your first issue--not when you place your order.

What is my subscription expiration?
The label on the envelope (or the cover wrap) has the expiration number for your subscription. Note that at times a renewed subscription is updated after an issue has closed for mailing. In that case, your subscription expiration will update on your next label. You can always log in to Subscription Genius to check the status of your subscriptions. If you are unable to log in, please use the customer service form here to check on your subscription status.

How come my renewal missed an issue?
Because we print to order, if the subscription renewal is received too late, it will start with the next issue to print. Once an issue goes to the printer (about four weeks before mailing) the subscription database is closed for that issue in order to allow us to prepare for its mailing.

When is my issue late?
Our experience with non-US mail is to allow four months. For domestic delivery allow six to eight weeks. Because we use Periodical mail to keep subscription rates low and that is not the same as first class, delivery will be slower and more variable.

Why wasn’t my magazine forwarded when I moved?
We send out subscriptions through USPS Periodical mail; this mail class isn’t forwarded. Instead, we receive a USPS form with the new address stapled to the front cover of the magazine (and yes, the rest of the magazine is destroyed). It’s important to get a change of address to us as soon as possible to ensure your subscription isn’t interrupted.

Strategy & Tactics history: Strategy & Tactics magazine is the longest running military history magazine. It was founded by Christopher Wagner in 1967 to focus on the new hobby of wargaming. Jim Dunnigan acquired the magazine and developed it into a military history magazine with a game format that brought many game and history enthusiasts together. Dunnigan and those he recruited to SPI also paved the way in turning military history research into hundreds of games. Although SPI went out of business in 1979, Strategy & Tactics magazine and its unique format managed to survive the 1980's before coming to its long-time home with Decision Games in 1991. Strategy & Tactics has been published by Decision Games since issue #140.

In Strategy & Tactics magazine, readers get much more than narrative stories of history; they get an analytical approach focusing on the “how” and “why” of battles and campaigns. All feature articles are lavishly illustrated with maps and pictures showing the action, along with sidebars on personalities, equipment and organization, and unique and unusual events.

  • Longest running military history magazine (350 issues as of January 2025)

  • First magazine to incorporate a complete, ready-toplay, board game in every (premium) issue (over 330 issue games)

  • Covers all eras from ancient/pre-gunpowder to current and potential confl icts

  • One feature article on each of four major time periods: pre-gunpowder, gunpowder, world wars and modern

World at War history: Launched in 2008, World at War magazine brings the Strategy & Tactics style to a focus on World War II. This unique approach goes in-depth with World War II, digging deeper into battles and campaigns, and seeking out the unusual and little-known events of this vast, worldwide conflict. All feature articles are copiously illustrated with maps and photographs, with shorter articles focused on the interesting and often surprising details and events. World at War published its 100th issue in January 2025.

In World at War magazine, readers enjoy fresh, in-depth accounts of World War II with an understanding of the “how” and “why” of battles and campaigns. Like Strategy & Tactics, all feature articles are lavishly illustrated with maps, historic images and supplemental sidebars.

  • 17 years in print

  • Incorporates a complete, ready-to-play, board game in every (Game Edition) issue.

  • Covers all theaters of WWII: Eastern Front, Western Front, Mediterranean, Pacific as well as prequel conflicts in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

  • Many sidebars and short articles look at the people, weapons, and other factors that influenced the course of the battles and, at times, the entire war.

  • Some issues include games or articles on battles or campaigns planned but not carried out (such as Sealion, the German plan to invade Great Britain) to evaluate alternate possibilities.

Legacy Publications

final issue cover of Modern War #55

Modern War: Military History in the Making, was published by Strategy & Tactics Press. It focused on recent, current and near-future conflict. Articles and columns focused on the post WWII/Modern era, current and potential conflicts with emphasis on analysis, maps and graphics. It was also available in a game edition. Games rotated among Cold War (1948-89), Modern (1990 to present) and near-future/potential conflicts.

Moves was a wargaming magazine originally published by SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc.), which also published manual wargames. Their flagship magazine Strategy & Tactics (S&T), was a military history magazine featuring a new wargame in each issue. While S&T was devoted to historical articles, Moves focused on the play of the games. Each issue carried articles dealing with strategies for different wargames, tactical tips, and many variants and scenarios for existing games. As time passed, reviews of new games also became an important feature. While the majority of the articles dealt with SPI games, the magazine was open to and published many articles on games by other companies.
